The Dutch and their electric cars: a special relationship

Electric cars are changing the Dutch automotive landscape. Together with Norway, the Netherlands is among the frontrunners in Europe. Tax incentives and an extensive charging network have proven to be prerequisites for success. Yet challenges remain, such as pressure on the electricity grid and growing competition from Chinese car brands.

EVs – The electric revolution or another false dawn?

While the growth in EVs has accelerated exponentially in recent years, we are lagging well behind where we need to be in terms of the ambitious government targets. The scale of the challenge is ambitious and one might wonder if there really is an EV revolution or is this another false dawn?

Topics will include:

  • Challenges in reaching our climate action targets
  • The decline in EV registrations
  • The need for Government to support the EV transition with ways to incentivise the market for both private and company car buyers.
  • Building a future-proof and robust charging infrastructure to support current growth
  • Grid demands – ensuring investment in the grid to meet future demand

Ireland’s transition to zero-emission public bus services

  • Ireland is in the early stages of transitioning its public bus services to operation by zero-emission vehicles.
  • Battery-electric urban buses are now in service in Athlone, Dublin and Limerick, with plans in place to intensify their operation in Dublin and Limerick, while also extending their sphere of operation to Galway and Sligo.
  • Ian will outline progress with the transition of the urban bus fleet, the challenges with implementing charging infrastructure in varied locations across Ireland and experiences to-date with operating bus services using zero-emission urban buses, as well as describing the steps that the NTA is taking to increase the amount of charging infrastructure available to public bus operators and to progress the transition of the non-urban bus fleet.
